History
For over a century, the Funiculaire du Vieux-Québec has connected the Quartier Petit-Champlain to the Terrasse Dufferin, offering a unique experience at the heart of Quebec’s heritage. The only funicular of its kind in America.

The first funicular, built by William Griffith, began operation on November 17, 1879. The cabins operated using a steam and water counterweight system.
1906

Alexander Cummings converted the funicular to electricity.
1945
1945
On July 2, 1945, a violent fire completely destroyed the funicular. In 1946, it was rebuilt with a protective metal cage.

Complete reconstruction with a state-of-the-art concept.

Sculpture designed by renowned artist Lucienne Cornet for the celebration of the Funiculaire’s 125th anniversary.
History
Maison Louis Jolliet
The funicular is accessible from the Maison Louis Jolliet (16 Rue du Petit-Champlain), built by architect Baillif in 1683 and restored in 1978.
